Write in your language.
Read in everyone’s.
Type or speak anything on the left. See it in five languages, live, on the right. Tap any card to hear it read aloud. Share the URL — recipients see your message in their own browser language. This is the substrate. The social network is still in build.
Tip: click Speak to dictate in any of the 24 languages. Click the speaker on any translation to hear it aloud.
How this works — honest version
This page is a working slice of the Babel substrate, not the full product. When you type, we call a public machine-translation API (MyMemory Translated, free, no login required) and render the result in five target languages in parallel. Translations typically return in 300–800ms per language pair.
Your text never touches our servers. The translation API call goes directly from your browser. When you click Share this message, your text is encoded into the URL hash (the # fragment). The hash never reaches any server — we cannot see what you wrote. The recipient’s browser decodes the hash and requests translation into their own browser language. No storage, no account, no tracking of message content.
Why "a slice." The full Babel product is a social network: a feed, followers, DMs, voice, video, all with substrate translation and voice preservation. This page demonstrates the translation-as-substrate architecture on a single message. The same pattern, applied to a feed and DMs, is what we’re building. The full product is explained here.
Quality caveat. MyMemory is a strong public translator but not the highest-quality engine available. For production, Babel will use better engines (on-device where possible, server-side with voice preservation for audio) and a glossary layer. Treat what you see here as directional — good enough to prove the pattern, not the final translation quality you’ll see at launch.
Rate limit. The free MyMemory quota is 50,000 words per day on this domain. If the demo starts returning quota errors, it’ll self-recover at UTC midnight. This is a demo constraint, not a production constraint.
