Isn't Bluesky already open?

Bluesky's AT Protocol is genuinely open — you can run your own PDS, take your handle with you, and plug in third-party labelers. That's a meaningful improvement over closed networks. But 'open' solves the governance problem, not the language problem. The network today is still overwhelmingly English-speaking, and even with federation, a Portuguese post sits in a Portuguese-speaking corner unless someone translates it manually. Babel makes that translation automatic and reciprocal, so openness extends to language too.

Does Babel support AT Protocol?

Babel publishes a public API at launch and is actively tracking AT Protocol interop so Bluesky clients can subscribe to translated Babel posts, and vice versa. The vision is that AT Protocol handles identity portability while Babel handles language portability — complementary layers, not competing ones. Nothing stops a user from keeping their did:plc on Bluesky and also joining Babel for cross-language reach.

Will my Bluesky followers move?

Babel is not asking you to pick. Many early users will run both — Bluesky for portable identity and English-language community, Babel for reaching everyone else. Cross-posting tools are on the roadmap, and your Bluesky handle can stay your canonical identity while Babel syndicates translated versions of your posts to audiences you'd never otherwise reach.

Is Babel decentralized like Bluesky?

Babel's content network is centralized at launch because real-time translation benefits hugely from a unified inference layer — fragmenting it across PDSes would make voice dubbing and cross-language search slow and uneven. That said, the data model is designed for future federation. The trade-off is conscious: translation quality first, decentralization next. Bluesky made the opposite trade, which is also reasonable.

What about the algorithm and discovery?

Bluesky gives you algorithmic choice via custom feeds, which is excellent. But every custom feed you subscribe to is still operating inside one language — you can tune the ranking but not the reach. Babel ranks posts by topic relevance across all 100+ languages, so a custom feed for 'machine learning' includes posts originally written in Japanese, German, Portuguese, and Mandarin, translated into your language in real time.

The Verdict

Bluesky is the best argument yet that social media infrastructure should be an open protocol, not a private database. Portable handles, custom feeds, composable moderation — every piece is a real answer to a real complaint about the incumbents. If you care about never being locked into a platform again, Bluesky is the best thing that's happened to social in a decade.

But Bluesky's growth ceiling is the language ceiling. A Portuguese speaker joins, finds a mostly-English feed, writes in Portuguese, gets heard only by the small Portuguese-speaking subset, and either switches to English or drifts away.
